How We Package Our World

From the mug you drink your morning coffee from to the carton of juice in your fridge—containers are everywhere in daily life. We use them to store, carry, and measure everything we eat, drink, and use.

Some containers are made for liquids: bottles, jugs, and glasses. Others hold dry goods: a bag of rice, a box of cereal, or a tin of cookies. Then there are special units of quantity: a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread (cut into slices), or a kilo of potatoes sold in a basket at the market.

Modern life also brought new packaging: blister packs for pills, six-packs for soda, and tubs for yogurt. While convenient, much of this packaging creates waste. That’s why many people now choose reusable jars, bags, or bottles.

Next time you open a packet of chips or pour milk from a carton, think: what was this product stored in—and what will happen to the container after you’re done?
